Folk art is usually part of a long-standing tradition, often nationalistic in character. Historically, cultures worldwide expressed their beliefs and traditions through their art and the functional wares of their society. Because every piece of folk art is individually hand-crafted, some imperfections and variations are to be expected and, in some cases, even desired! An example of folk art is the wood Santos of Mexico. Santos are painted wood carvings of saints that represent one of the oldest living traditions of religious devotion.
Michael and Jeanne Bernstein have been traveling throughout Mexico, South America, Asia, Indonesia, Africa, and Europe where they have unearthed the essence of the Colonial experience in each of these regions of the world.
